Nail Care : Construction of the Nail

I recieved some questions for posts about nail care. So I decided to write once in a while a post about this subject. Today I'm going to write something about the construction of the nail. I'm using information which I already knew, information from the internet and information from the Trind guide.

Alright above text is from the Trind guide, it's written in Dutch so I will translate above text.
The text says the nails are build from Keratin just like your hair and skin does. Keratin is a though insoluble protein. The part which we are calling the nail is actually a part of your nail. The nail you see is your nail body. This nail body contains dead keratin cells. So your nails are build with layers, it contains about 100 layers. The lowest part of your nails is the matrix. This matrix grows into your Lanula (which is the half moon on your nail). The moisture in your nail body is taking care of the firmness and flexibility of your nail. So when your nail is growing longer it will split or break easier.

On above picture you can see all the parts of your nail. So you can see your Cuticles. De Lanula (the half moon). The nail body and the nail bed. The nailbed is the part where your nails are in.

And last but not least, something about the cuticles. The cuticles are there to take care of the space between your nail and skin. The cuticle prevents dirt and bacteria to enter the body. This is the reason why you always have to take good care of your cuticles!
